We invite you to a stencil printing workshop led by Ksenia Kovalova — a Ukrainian artist, printmaker, designer, curator, and co-founder of the Kyiv-based printmaking hub WOLNY DRUK.
This is a rare opportunity to meet and work directly with an artist who, despite the war, the bombardment of Kyiv, and extremely difficult circumstances, has continued her artistic and educational practice. Ksenia continues to create, teach, organize events, and, together with her team, run Wolny Druk in Kyiv — a space that brings together a community of contemporary Ukrainian printmakers.
Now you have the opportunity to meet her in person at Savchenko Gallery in Gdańsk and, under her guidance, discover one of the most direct and creative printmaking techniques — stencil printing.
STENCIL PRINTING — FORM, RHYTHM, COLOR
During this hands-on workshop, participants will create their own paper stencils and use them to produce a series of original prints.
We will experiment with form, rhythm, repetition, negative space, and layers of color, exploring how simple elements can gradually develop into complex and unique images.
Ukrainian traditions of ornament and decorative thinking will also serve as a source of inspiration. However, rather than copying existing folk motifs, each participant will create their own contemporary composition, using tradition as inspiration for working with rhythm, signs, and form.
The workshop is focused above all on hands-on practice: from developing an idea and creating your own stencil to printing and observing how the image changes through successive impressions and layers of color.
No previous experience in printmaking or graphic art is required.
Each participant will leave the workshop with their own series of original prints.
WORKSHOP LEADER — KSENIA KOVALOVA
Ksenia Kovalova is a Ukrainian artist, printmaker, fashion designer, curator of art projects, and educator. She specializes in both classical and original hand-printing techniques.
She leads workshops and courses in printmaking and hand printing, including classes for students at art universities. She is also a curator of artistic and social projects and one of the initiators of the Wolny Druk festival.
She co-founded and runs WOLNY DRUK — Printmaking Hub in Kyiv, an independent space bringing together art, design, traditional printmaking techniques, risograph printing, and contemporary experiments in print.
WORKSHOP + EXHIBITION
Taking part in the workshop is also a great opportunity to visit “PRINT SYNERGY”, the exhibition currently on view at Savchenko Gallery, featuring artists associated with the Kyiv-based Wolny Druk hub.
It is an opportunity not only to discover contemporary Ukrainian printmaking, but also to learn more about the artistic community in which these works are created — and to meet in person one of the people who continue to build and develop this community in Kyiv despite the war.
Join us! This is a unique opportunity to discover stencil printing under the guidance of an artist from Kyiv and create your own series of original prints.
