Komeda – “Romances” is the debut project of two young artists: vocalist Joanna Wojtkiewicz and pianist Mateusz Kaszuba. The idea for the project arose from the desire to interpret the compositions of Krzysztof Komeda-Trzciński in an authentic and simple way. While studying in Denmark, Joanna began to seek a connection with Polish music and film. It was in the Polish cinematography of the sixties, including works by Jerzy Skolimowski, Andrzej Wajda, and Roman Polański, that she discovered Krzysztof Komeda’s music from a different perspective. By analyzing the compositions more deeply, she managed to find lyrics for Krzysztof Komeda’s compositions, which turned out to be the works of great creators such as Wojciech Młynarski and Agnieszka Osiecka. Joanna, who has been in love with poetry since childhood, found a part of herself in the lyrical layer of the songs, which allowed her to naturally interpret the lyrics. Mateusz and Joanna strive to maintain an intimate character in their performances, where only the piano and voice convey both the lyrical and compositional content.

“Joanna Wojtkiewicz has a voice that enchants Komeda’s compositions; she is incredibly authentic and lyrical, engaging excellently with Mateusz Kaszuba’s ‘Komeda-esque’ piano. The session is not a race to make the songs catchy, but rather a capture of the atmosphere, mood, sound, and melody. It’s about building beautiful musical associations through unobtrusive sounds, virtuosic phrases, and the subtly sensitive language of Agnieszka Osiecka and Wojciech Młynarski’s lyrics.”

ERA JAZZU
“The creators, using their sensitivity but also a proper approach to musical form – within the realm of classical jazz – have created an album that captivates with refinement. There is interpretative purity, a certain simplicity, but also the energy of the moment, strongly marking the whole with something incredibly moving. And in this naturalness lies a great power of influence on the listener.”
